The ABCs of the evils of slavery, a reproduction of the plates. As befits a primer, the artwork is accompanied by poems and editorial comment intended to edify and educate the reader. c. 1864, Abel C. Thomas.

Some of the references, I admit, go over my head. But the illustrations, like the one for A here, incorporate a lot of symbolism and are still emotionally engaging today. Because the comments and illustrations are harsh and graphic, nudity, I suspect this was not actually intended for children.

The copycat effect is what happens when the media makes an event into a "hot death story" and then via behavior contagion, more deaths, suicides, murders, and more occur in a regularly predictive cycle, as per the book The Copycat Effect.

This site is infrequently updated, however, still worth checking out for interesting takes on how events in the news trigger more events in the news, and how the press and media contribute to this cycle of copycat crime and behavior.

"The Crocodile Hunter" - A Celebrity Death First?

I, like most people, was surprised by "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin's death at the "business end" of an animal.

But not really surprised. Ya know what I mean?

Now, the only contender for the next "people-chow" wildlife celebrity treat is the Disneyfied Jeff Corwin, seen here with a wild, dangerous rubber squeaky toy.

This "devil-ducky may care" attitude may keep him off rotten.com's death-pool, but it will also not ensure him the everlasting fame of the painful, bizarre demise of the studly and clearly heterosexual Irwin.

Cute as he is, Corwin can claim only to have once been bitten by a coral snake.

But it didn't kill him, and it didn't even happen on camera.

The other Australian bush-whacker, Crocodile Dundee, is a bit past his prime, and I don't think there's enough Geritol or crack in Australia to get him rolling around in the swamps with the wildlife any more. Well, one can hope.
